Anchor watch on your chartplotter

Safety-critical

This affects a safety feature. Read carefully and confirm the behavior on your own boat.

Run the anchor watch from the chartplotter at the helm. Your GOAT device adds an SV.GOAT tile to B&G, Simrad and Lowrance chartplotters (Navico). It has been tested on a B&G Zeus. The anchor watch on your chartplotter needs a GOAT device.

What you need

  • A GOAT device with its latest update (1.6.59 or later). Updates install by themselves.
  • A B&G, Simrad or Lowrance chartplotter on the same boat network as the GOAT device (the same router, by cable or Wi-Fi).
  • For phones to follow the watch: SV.GOAT 2.0.217 or later on Android, 2.0.202 or later on iPhone and iPad.
  • Furuno is coming later. Raymarine and Garmin are not supported.

Set the anchor from the chartplotter

  1. On the chartplotter's home screen, tap the SV.GOAT tile. The ANCHOR GUARD page opens.
  2. Tap DROP when the anchor is on the seabed. To fine-tune the spot, drag the anchor or use Fine adjust.
  3. Set the Alarm radius with − and + (20–100 m).
  4. Tap SET. The page shows Watching.
  5. To end the watch, tap RAISE ANCHOR, then Raise anchor to confirm.

DROP and SET stay grey until the GOAT device has a live GPS position, the same as in the app.

When it alarms

  • A red DRAGGING banner flashes on the page. The chartplotter makes no sound. The sound comes from your phones.
  • STOP stops the flashing on the chartplotter only. The watch stays armed.
  • Quiet works like Quiet in the app. It stops the alarm on your phones now. If the boat is still dragging, the phones sound again after 20 minutes. Alerts to phones away from the boat pause for 60 minutes, or less if the boat moves 10 m further out.
  • +5 m, +10 m and +15 m increase the radius, within the same nightly limit as the app.
  • RAISE ANCHOR ends the watch everywhere.

Neighbour watch and hazard lines

Tap Hazards to turn on neighbour watch or draw a hazard line. They are the same settings as in the app.

  • NEIGHBOUR CLOSING means an anchored AIS boat is inside your bubble. It only sees boats with AIS.
  • HAZARD: means the boat is close to one of your hazard lines.
  • Snooze pauses that alarm for 15 minutes on the chartplotter and on your phones. If the boat is still too close, it comes back. The drag alarm has no Snooze.

Your phones

  • Owner phones on the boat Wi-Fi pick up a watch set at the chartplotter within about 10 seconds. They run their own anchor alarm, with or without internet. The app shows Armed from SV.GOAT helm.
  • The chartplotter shows Phones watching: and how many.
  • iPhone and iPad: keep SV.GOAT open. If the app is closed, you get "Anchor set at the SV.GOAT helm. Open SV.GOAT so this phone watches it too."
  • Android: with the app closed, it checks every 15 minutes. If it can't start the watch, it shows the same notification.
  • A phone picks up the watch only when it has a live boat GPS position. Guests on a shared boat, and phones using Use this phone's GPS, don't pick it up.
  • A watch set or changed on a phone shows on the chartplotter within seconds.
  • Raise on a phone or on the chartplotter ends the watch on every screen on the boat network.

With no internet

The chartplotter, the GOAT device and your phones on the boat Wi-Fi all keep working. Phones away from the boat get no alerts until the boat is back online. While the boat is offline the page shows The boat has lost its internet. Changes made offline sync by themselves when the connection returns (Not synced yet until then).

Who can change the watch

  • A chartplotter on the boat network can drop, set and raise the anchor from the page.
  • Other screens on the boat network, such as a phone's browser or a laptop, can open the page but only look. They show View only: anchor controls work from the boat's chartplotter.
  • The boat owner can turn Chartplotter control off. The chartplotter is then view-only too. It never ends a running watch.
    • On the web: svgoat.app → your boat → GOAT device → Chartplotter control.
    • In the app: Settings → GOAT Device → Device Management → Chartplotter.
    • The change reaches the GOAT device at its next check-in, within about 5 minutes (30 minutes in offshore mode). It needs internet.

Troubleshooting

  • No SV.GOAT tile. Check that the chartplotter and the GOAT device are on the same network. Wait 10–20 seconds on the home screen. Check the GOAT device has its latest update. Furuno, Raymarine and Garmin don't show the tile.
  • A "Signal K" or "Victron" tile. Those come from other equipment on your network, not from SV.GOAT. Use the SV.GOAT tile.
  • "View only" on the chartplotter. If it says Chartplotter control is turned off, turn it back on (see above), then wait for the next check-in. Otherwise the GOAT device hasn't found the chartplotter yet: check that both are on the same network, then wait a minute.
  • Find the page another way. In the app, open Settings → GOAT Device → Device Management. The Chartplotter page address works in any browser on the boat network, view-only.
  • Grey grid instead of a map. The map needs internet. Offline, offshore and in night mode the page shows a plain grid. The watch works the same. An offline map is coming later.
  • No sound at the helm. That's expected on the Zeus: its browser has no speaker. Keep a phone with SV.GOAT on the boat Wi-Fi.

Warning: The chartplotter shows the alarm but can't sound it. Make sure at least one phone on board is watching (Phones watching: on the page), especially at night.

Note: The page follows the chartplotter's day and night mode.
