How drag detection works
Safety-critical
This affects a safety feature. Read carefully and confirm the behavior on your own boat.
The anchor watch alarms when your boat goes outside the radius you set and stays outside. Swinging around a set anchor inside the radius is normal and stays quiet.
How it works
- It alarms when the boat stays outside the radius. The boat has to be outside your radius (by at least half a metre) for more than 30 seconds. If it comes back inside, the count starts again.
- It uses an average position. The watch averages your position over the last 30 seconds, so a single jumpy GPS reading won't set it off.
- Swinging inside the radius never sets it off. Riding back and forth on your rode is expected and stays quiet.
- Short GPS gaps don't restart the count. A gap of up to 30 seconds is forgiven. After a longer gap, the count starts again.
- No internet needed. The phone running the watch alarms with no internet at all. Being at anchor offshore does not turn it off.
Note: The radius is at least the value you set (minimum 20 m). If your rode scope is known, the watch may use a slightly larger, more realistic radius so normal swinging doesn't cause false alarms.
When the position stops coming
If the watch gets no position for about 2 minutes, what you see depends on why.
- Boat GPS lost is a loud alarm. The boat is reachable but isn't sending a GPS position, so drag detection is blind. Check the boat's GPS.
- Phone GPS lost is a loud alarm. This happens if the watch uses this phone's GPS and the phone has no fix. Move the phone where it can see the sky.
- [Boat name] — no signal to the boat is a quiet notice with no siren. It means your phone lost its link to the boat while your GOAT device is still watching. Tap Quiet till back in signal, or Keep telling me for a reminder every 15 minutes.
- [Boat name] has lost its internet is one standard notification. It means your phone is online but the boat isn't, so the GOAT device's alarms can't reach you until it's back. It has no quiet option.
- Lost contact with the boat is a loud alarm. It means your phone can't reach the boat and can't be sure anything else is watching.
The quiet notice is used only when all of these are true:
- The watch reached your GOAT device.
- Your phone was reaching the boat over the internet, not the boat's own WiFi.
- It has been more than 35 minutes since you set or changed the watch.
Otherwise you get the loud alarm. A boat without a GOAT device, and a watch using this phone's GPS, always get the loud alarm.
When the signal comes back
- Back inside the radius: a quiet [Boat name] — back in touch notice, for example Now 12 m of 40 m. No signal from 02:10 to 02:55.
- Outside the radius: [Boat name] — back in touch, outside the radius plays a sound. If the boat keeps moving, the full drag alarm sounds after its usual short check.
Warning: An anchor-drag alarm is never snoozed. Quiet only pauses it: if the boat is still dragging, it sounds again. Quiet till back in signal only quiets the no-signal notice. It never silences a drag alarm.
