Update a cut-off device by USB

Web

Devices normally update themselves over the internet (see Device updates). But if a device has been offline for a long time and can't receive automatic updates, you can bring the update to it on a USB stick. This needs physical access to the device.

Steps

  1. On a computer, sign in to the web dashboard (svgoat.app) and open the Updates page.
  2. Click Download Update Package. This downloads a ZIP file.
  3. Format a USB stick as FAT32 (most sticks already are). Extract the ZIP, then copy the two files it contains — svgoat-update.tar.gz and svgoat-update.json — to the root of the stick. Both files must sit at the top level, not inside a folder.
  4. Plug the USB stick into any USB port on your GOAT device.
  5. The device detects the stick, verifies and applies the update, and restarts on its own — no internet required. Watch the device's LED: 5 flashes = success, 3 flashes = failed. Give it a couple of minutes.
  6. The stick ejects itself when the update finishes, so it's safe to remove. You can open update-result.txt on the stick to see the outcome.

Note: No app step is involved — the download lives on the web dashboard, and the rest happens on the device itself.
