Offshore mode (save satellite data)
Offshore mode is a data-saver for when your boat is online through an expensive link, like satellite on passage. It cuts how often the device talks to the cloud so you don't burn through data. It is not an offline switch.
How it works
- With offshore mode on, the device checks in far less often (roughly every 30 minutes instead of every few minutes), and routine dashboard updates to the cloud are paused. Your live readings on the boat are unaffected.
- Safety is never throttled. Anchor watch keeps its normal fast checks even in offshore mode.
- Your device keeps recording voyages and running every alarm locally the whole time. When a good link returns, or you turn offshore mode off, it catches the cloud back up.
- Because a 30-minute gap is normal offshore, the server's [Boat name] has lost its internet notice isn't sent while offshore mode is on.
Turn it on or off
- Open Settings.
- Toggle Offshore Mode on or off.
Note: Only the boat's owner can change offshore mode.
Note: If your phone loses the boat during an anchor watch and can't confirm your GOAT device is still watching, you get the loud Lost contact with the boat alarm, not a quiet notice. That holds offshore too.
Note: Offshore mode also stretches how often the device checks for updates, so a device update may not install until you're back on a normal connection. See Device updates.
The trade-off is freshness: while offshore, the dashboard on your other phones and on the web may lag behind by up to half an hour. For what still runs with no connection at all, see What still works offline.
